Helsinki Airport (HEL) Terminals 

In 2012, a new terminal addition was inaugurated. On June 21, 2022, terminals 1 and 2 were consolidated to create a single terminal from which all flights are now run. In general, Helsinki airport has one terminal. The following information is regarding the Helsinki Airport Terminals:

Schengen Area

it has 15 gates with jet bridges. All European flights within the Schengen region are handled by this terminal; it is also known as the oldest at Helsinki HEL Airport.

Non-Schengen area

The larger of the two terminals, Helsinki International airport has 39 gates. Also known as non-Schengen. It operates all non-Schengen flights, international flights, and charter flights. Moreover, it offers a direct link to Helsinki Central Railway Station from the Airport Train Station.

Please be aware that a 250-meter interior walkway connects the airport’s two terminals.

Departure from Helsinki airport – Helsinki HEL Airport has a single terminal. All travellers leave from level two’s Departures Hall. The Departures Hall also houses the check-in and security control areas. Please adhere to the check-in time specified by your travel agent or airline. It is wise to make travel arrangements in advance and arrive at HEL Airport well before your flight, especially during the busiest times. You may encounter a rush at the following time – 

  • Between 6 and 8.30 in the morning
  • In the afternoon, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM
  • During the start of the school year, the Christmas and Easter holidays, or the fall and winter breaks.

  • Mail Boxes – Mail can be sent from the Post drop-off boxes by passengers. These postal boxes are located in the arrivals and departures hall. Both WHSmith and R-Kioski sell stamps. It is a 24 hours open facility.
  • Medical services – Emergency care is also available at the Ava Air medical facility, which is situated in the arrivals area. Moreover, there are multiple AEDs available at the arrival and departure hall.
  • Taxi Point Services  – Located on floor 1, in the Arrivals hall, there is the Taxi Point Service desk. Finland’s HEL Airport has agreements with the following taxi companies: Fixu Taxi (Cabonline), Taksi, Helsinki, and Menevä.  There are display screens next to the taxi ranks and in front of the terminals, passengers can see the company-specific price information.
  • Helsinki Airport sleeping pods – Near Gate 31, there is the Kainuu Lounge, an airside quiet area with carpeting and two long recliners. There are also various “work and rest” areas spread out throughout the airport.

Directions by different transport to Helsinki Airport 

There are numerous transportation options from HEL to the surrounding areas of Finland and Helsinki airport to the city centre. If you arrive at the airport by car, train, taxi, bus, or bicycle, you will have no trouble getting to the terminal:

From Car

The distance between Helsinki City Center and HEL is 20 kilometres, and it takes 30 minutes to travel there by vehicle or train. From Helsinki, a bus trip takes 40–50 minutes.

  • Driving to the airport in a car is convenient and comfortable. There are 400 electric vehicle charging stations at Finavia’s parking lots, and there is a short-term parking space just near to the port.

From Bus 

From the airport to City Center, the bus takes route 600. About 40 minutes are needed for the trip. Online, using the HSL mobile app, or at the ticket machine at the bus station are the two ways to buy tickets. The HSL.fi website has more information on tickets and prices.

From Train 

  • The train station for the airport is situated beneath the main building. From the departures and arrivals hall, there is a direct elevator and escalator link to the train station.
  • With just one train ticket, travellers may easily get from the airport to wherever in Finland

From Taxi

  • If travellers choose to take a cab out of the airport, they can find the taxi stand outside the Arrivals area. They can select the lane and the taxi firm they want to use from among the four taxi lanes.
  • Operating from lanes 1-3 are the three taxi firms who have a contract with the airport corporation Finavia. The taxi station displays the prices for those cabs. From lane 4, other cab firms operate.

Runways at HEL

There are three Helsinki Airport Runways. When snow and ice need to be cleared, two runways can be kept in service thanks to the utilization of three runways (if one runway is being cleared at a time). 

  • Runway 2 (15), which is in the northwest, and Runway 1 (22L), which is in the northeast, both of which are in the direction of Nurmijärvi, are the principal landing strips.
  • Runway 3 (22R), which is situated in the southwest and points in the general direction of Western Vantaa and Espoo, is the main runway for takeoffs.
  • Runway 1 (22L) can be used for simultaneous departures of low-noise aircraft headed south. 
  • Runways 3 (04L) or 1 (04R) are typically utilized for landings when the wind is from the north or east, i.e. for approaches from the southwest, the direction of Western Vantaa and Espooa.
  • Takeoffs are performed from Runway 1 (04R) in the direction of Kerava, which is northeast.

Parking at Helsinki Airport 

Parking at Helsinki Airport offers sensible, affordable, and convenient parking. The cheapest parking options are available at the Airport, and daily fees never change. There are thousands of places accessible because numerous parking lots were constructed with passengers in mind.

The HEL official parking facilities offer thousands of spaces to visitors and travellers around the Clock with various parking options:

  • P1 Premium provides both short-term and long-term premium parking.
  • P2 is located 50 metres from the terminal building.
  • P3 is roughly 50 metres from the security checkpoint in Terminal 1 and 300 metres from Terminal 2.
  • 950 metres from Terminal 2 and 750 metres from Terminal 1, respectively, P4 has a few outdoor, inexpensive parking spaces. A free parking shuttle runs from there to the terminals.
  • The most recent parking space at the airport is P5. It is extremely cheaply priced and ideally situated close to both terminals. Its distance from Terminals 1 and 2 is 200 and 300 metres, respectively.
  • The short-term parking option P Short Term allows for passenger pickup and drop-off. It is in the garage, close to terminal 1.

Parking Rates at HEL:

At Helsinki, the first ten minutes of parking are free. Following that, the cost of parking in the parking lot varies considerably depending on where you park your cars and how long you want to leave them there. Yet, the airport guarantees the most unbelievable prices for both short- and long-term parking:

  • Helsinki Airport parking can cost as little as a few euros for 20 to 30 minutes to as much as 42 euros per week (when it comes to departing from Terminal 1 and 2)
  • Additionally, parking lot P4’s minimum charge is 42 euros. For this time period, parking at lots P5 and P3 will cost 65 and 69 euros, respectively, while at lots P2 and P1, the cost rises to 110-145 euros. Over a 24-hour period, transit travellers will pay between 10 and 35 euros.
