Juan Santamaría International Airport is the main international airport in Costa Rica, located in Alajuela Province, 20 kilometers west of downtown San José. It is the largest and busiest airport in the country, handling over 5 million passengers annually. The airport is named after Juan Santamaría, a Costa Rican national hero who died defending the country against American filibuster William Walker in 1856.
