Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport is the main airport serving São Luís, the capital of the state of Maranhão in Brazil. It is located 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) from the city center. The airport is named after Air Marshal Hugo da Cunha Machado, who was born in Maranhão.
The airport was inaugurated in 1942, and it was originally a military airfield. In 1974, the airport was transferred to Infraero, the Brazilian government’s airport authority. In 1998, a new terminal was opened at the airport, and in 2004, the airport was upgraded to international status.
