Fabio Alberto León Bentley Airport is an airport serving Mitú in the Vaupés Department of Colombia. It is next to the Vaupés River and runs along the entire length of the city. It has an asphalt runway sufficient for medium-sized passenger jets and military transport aircraft. The passenger terminal is small but functional, with one or two shops and a cafeteria. All visitors to Mitú must register with the police at the airport upon arrival and departure.
The airport is named after Fabio Alberto León Bentley, a Colombian aviator who was born in Mitú in 1922. León Bentley was a pioneer of aviation in Colombia, and he flew for Satena, the country’s national airline, for many years. He died in a plane crash in 1977.
The first commercial flights to Mitú began in 1950, and the airport was officially opened in 1963. The airport has been upgraded several times since then, and it is now capable of handling up to 300 passengers per hour.
