Enrique Malek International Airport is an international airport serving David, the capital of Chiriquí Province in Panama. It is the second busiest airport in Panama, after Tocumen International Airport. The airport is named after Enrique Malek, a Panamanian pilot and aviation pioneer.
The airport was originally built in 1941 by the United States Army Air Forces as an auxiliary airfield for Howard Field, which is located near Panama City. The airport was used by the USAAF during World War II for training and reconnaissance missions over the Southeast Pacific coastline. After the war, the airport was turned over to the Panamanian government and began operating as a civil and military airport.
In recent years, Enrique Malek International Airport has undergone a number of renovations and expansions. In 2013, a new passenger terminal was opened, and in 2018, the runway was extended to 2,593 meters (8,507 feet). The airport can now accommodate a wide range of aircraft, including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s.
The airport is located approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the city of David. It is accessible by taxi, bus, or rental car.
